Tennyson, the portrait artist

Tennyson Samraj is a portrait artist specializing in influential cultural figures from contemporary society and history. Tennyson began painting portraits in his early twenties. He painted portraits with oil paints on canvas for many years. He experimented with traditional techniques, but found that using his fingers as paintbrushes worked the best for him—certainly an unusual technique.

After moving to Canada he gave up oil painting, but continued to experiment with different mediums including sculpture and digitally born artworks. Creating art in unusual ways found another unusual medium for portrait art—Microsoft Paint.

He started experimenting with a 1995 version of Microsoft Paint. Using the spray paint and pencil tool he began creating detailed portraits once again. Looking at these portraits one almost thinks they are pencil drawings, under closer inspection every dot and line can be seen. Each portrait takes him between 8-15 hours of meticulous and precise clicking of a computer mouse.

His interest lies in influential cultural figures. His focus includes but is not limited to both famous and obscure philosophers, writers, poets, artists, musicians, scientists, politicians, revolutionaries, athletes and philanthropists. His passion is in capturing the thoughts and ideas behind the person in each portrait he creates.
